Stevie Nicks just got candid about a major decision she made in the late 70s – one she thinks would have majorly affected her band, Fleetwood Mac.

In an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning on October 27, Nicks discussed her difficult decision to have an abortion in 1979, expressing that had she chosen differently, it could have spelled disaster for the band. The legendary singer reflected on her relationship with Eagles frontman Don Henley, revealing she was shocked to find herself pregnant despite having taken precautions, including using an IUD.

“I got pregnant and it was like, ‘Why? I have an IUD. I am totally protected,'” the 76-year-old recalled, noting that the group was already on the rise and gearing up for their third album at the time. “Fleetwood Mac is three years in, and it’s big,” the “Go Your Own Way” songstress said, declaring that, “It would have destroyed Fleetwood Mac.” She acknowledged the strain that an unexpected child would have placed on the band, especially following her breakup with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham a few years earlier. “It would’ve been a nightmare scenario for me to live through,” she admitted.

Fans ran to the comments of a video shared on YouTube to show their support for the rockstar, many finding inspiration in Nick’s openness and courage. “She is a national treasure. Thanks for speaking your truth Stevie,” said one fan. Another commented, “It is always so brave to share these personal stories. We shouldn’t have to. But it’s so important that we do.”

Nicks has previously mentioned how her abortion influenced the band’s music, particularly the 1979 song “Sara.” In a 2014 interview with Billboard, the Grammy winner said, “Had I married Don and had that baby… I would have named her Sara.” The Eagle’s frontman actually revealed the news of Nick’s pregnancy to the public himself, according to her Interview with Rolling Stone that was published on October 24.

Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975, contributing to notable albums like Rumours and Tusk. She had an on-and-off romantic relationship with Buckingham, which began before joining the band and continued throughout their rise to fame. After they’re breakup a few years later, Nicks went on to date Henley, with whom she had a brief relationship in the late 1970s. In 1983, she married Kim Anderson, the widower of her close friend, Robin Anderson. Nicks married him shortly after Robin’s death, believing it was a way to support Kim during a difficult time. However, their marriage lasted only three months, as Nicks later realized it was not the right decision for her. Nicks has no children.
