On Friday night, two of the most hyped-up No. 1 picks of all time will square off as LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers head to Texas to meet Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
The Lakers enter Friday night’s contest with a 7-4 record, fresh off a 128-123 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, one in which James was exemplary, scoring 35 points, securing 12 rebounds and dishing out 14 assists. That the 2003 No. 1 pick keeps performing at this level so close to 40 years old is truly remarkable, making Laker basketball games appointment viewing this season.
The Spurs, meanwhile, sit at 6-6, off to a much better start than last season when they went 22-60. San Antonio most recently defeated the Washington Wizards 139-130 behind a masterful performance by Wembanyama, who had a career-high 50 points in the contest to go with six rebounds, two assists and three blocks in what was an otherworldly two-way performance.
The 7-foot-4 swingman, still just 20 years old, is only now beginning to scratch the surface of his potential, so watching his development this campaign will surely be exciting for both Spurs fans and basketball fans in general.
Wembanyama and James have faced off twice thus far in their careers, with the Spurs and Lakers splitting those two matchups. On Dec. 15, 2023, San Antonio defeated Los Angeles 129-115 behind the French forward’s 13 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks.
James and the Lakers got even on Feb. 3 of this year, defeating San Antonio 123-118 behind James’ 30 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists. Wembanyama was spectacular in that matchup, too, however, going off for 27 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and five blocks, an unheard-of stat line, especially for a player who hasn’t even turned 21 yet.
Tune in on Friday night to see two of the most exciting players basketball has to offer, Wembanyama and James. You surely won’t be disappointed.
