Following the breakdown of the centre-left coalition in Berlin, the opposition far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is demanding that Chancellor Olaf Scholz immediately seek a vote of confidence in the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said after a special meeting of the AfD parliamentary group in Berlin that Scholz had long lost the trust of the public.

“He must clear the way for new elections, for the vote of confidence immediately,” she emphasized, adding that the vote must be held as early as next week.

To delay the confidence vote until January 15, as Scholz plans, would be irresponsible, said Weidel. She described the end of the coalition as having dealt a blow for liberation.
