Republicans are fighting to keep their majority in the U.S. House after sweeping the Senate, which could give President-elect Donald Trump unified power in the White House. Control for majority remains in the balance, with many races still too close to call as the ballots roll in. Much of the focus is on California where Democrats are aiming to flip five seats crucial to winning back the House. Incumbent Republicans are currently holding onto their seats but often by less than a percentage point. The Democrats are hoping to flip the House as last line of defense against the Trump administration. But many Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, predicted the chamber will be the next to fall for a “unified government.” President Biden had a unified government for his first two years in office but he lost it in 2023 when Republicans regained the House.
