Black bear population growing in New Mexico
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish said the black bear population is steadily growing thanks to improved conservation efforts. Game and Fish said every year, a group of wildlife biologists and veterinarians survey northern New Mexico to see how many black bears are in the state, how robust the population is, and how they adapt to the ever-changing climate.

“So what these capturing collar efforts are giving us insights on is how these bears are doing in current conditions. What’s going on with them as the climate is shifting. What’s going on with them as developments are growing and really understanding how they’re adapting and changing their use of resources and how we’re still having these robust populations that are growing and persisting in spite of all the change that’s going on,” said Carnivore & Small Mammal Program Manager Nick Forman.
Game and Fish said a study from New Mexico State University found the highest density of black bears was in northern New Mexico with 28 bears per 100 square kilometers.
