San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy provided the latest update on his elbow injury after he was forced to exit the team’s 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions late in the fourth quarter on Monday night.

Purdy said the elbow “doesn’t feel the best,” and added it felt like his “arm was on fire.” He said he’s going to get an MRI on Tuesday before the team figures out the next steps.

Purdy, who suffered a UCL tear in the NFC Championship Game two years ago against the Philadelphia Eagles, said the injury felt a little similar to that one. However, he said he underwent tests on the UCL and everything looked good for now.

“We did some tests with UCL stuff and I’m good in that regard,” Purdy said. “Just gotta go get imaging on it tomorrow and see the whole thing.”

Purdy was forced to exit the game with 1:36 to go in the fourth quarter after getting sacked by Lions safety Brian Branch. He went to the sideline and attempted to throw the ball, but immediately shook his head and took his helmet off.

Purdy was in the midst of an impressive game, completing 27-of-35 passes for 377 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. His status for Week 18 is yet to be determined, per head coach Kyle Shanahan, but based on Purdy’s comments on Monday night, and the fact that the 49ers are eliminated from playoff contention, it’s hard to imagine Purdy suiting up. If that’s the case, he’ll finish the 2024 season with 3,864 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Last year, Purdy was much better, throwing for 4,280 yards with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. However, the 49ers had a down year across the board in 2024, and will now head into the offseason with plenty of questions.

Arguably the biggest question is how much to pay Purdy. The 25-year-old is eligible for a contract extension on Jan. 6, and will have a base salary just over $1 million in 2025 before hitting free agency at the end of the year.

Purdy has shown more than enough to secure a lucrative payday from San Francisco, but it’s unclear how much he’ll get. Last year, a contract in the range of $60 million per season felt like a possibility. However, with the way he and the team regressed in 2024, it’s possible his price has been altered. This injury could end up throwing a wrench in things, too, but that remains to be seen.
