China had a total of 11.43 million electric vehicle (EV) charging points installed across the country as of the end of September 2024, according to the latest data released by the country’s National Energy Administration (NEA). This represents an almost 50% increase from the same time last year, with a total of 2.84 million new charging points installed in the first nine months of 2024.

With just over 28 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) estimated to be in circulation in the country at present, comprising mainly electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, there is almost one charging point for every 2.5 NEVs. NEA data shows that 66.67 billion kWh of energy were consumed in charging NEVs in the first nine months of 2024, a year-on-year increase of over 12%.

NEV sales in China are estimated to have risen by 36% to 7.392 million units in the first nine months of the year, based on wholesale data collected by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
